Officers of Paraguay’s National Directorate of Tax Revenue (DNIT) found 5.2 kg
of suspected marijuana in a box of toys during a check of express courier cargo
at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport.[1] The shipment had come from
Miami, United States, and was in the cargo depot of the national civil aviation
authority (DINAC), where the checks took place.[1] Inside the box they found
several packages hidden among the toys.[2] During the procedure, an AirTag
tracking device hidden in the parcel began to sound.[1] Tracking devices of
that kind are commonly used by drug-trafficking networks to follow the location
of drug loads, according to La Nación.[1]
The DNIT alerted the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD), Paraguay’s
anti-drug agency, which was to continue the proceedings.[3] Officers drew up a
formal record of the inspection.[3] The substance still had to be tested to
confirm its composition.[3] The DNIT said it keeps strengthening checks on
cargo entering Paraguay to detect possible illicit substances and alert the
competent authorities.[3]
