Hariharganj police in Palamu district stopped a CNG autorickshaw on National Highway 139 on Monday 12 October and seized 18 kg 470 g of ganja concealed in a specially built box beneath the driver’s and passengers’ seats.[1] Station officer-in-charge Deobrat Poddar said the drug was packed in 18 packets of different weights, hidden to avoid detection.[1]
The driver, 52-year-old Md Nayeem, was arrested along with the autorickshaw; he allegedly told investigators a local person had entrusted him with the consignment and claimed he did not know the packets held contraband.[1] Because Hariharganj sits close to the Jharkhand-Bihar border, police suspect the load was meant for transport into Bihar, and they are tracing its source and destination.[1] Nayeem was forwarded to judicial custody on Tuesday 13 October under the NDPS Act; at 18.47 kg the seizure counts as an intermediate quantity, below the 20 kg commercial threshold.[1]
