US Customs officers stopped a tractor-trailer entering the United States at the Bridge of the Americas in El Paso on 7 February 2003 and found more than six tons of marijuana inside.[1] The 12,620 pounds of cannabis, about 5.7 tonnes, were packed in cardboard boxes hidden behind a load of wooden pallets.[1]

The truck had been pulled for a non-intrusive inspection that found discrepancies in the pallet load.[2][1] A drug-detection dog then alerted on the trailer before inspectors opened the boxes.[1] Two male Mexican nationals from Ciudad Juarez were arrested in the incident.[1] The agency called it the largest single drug bust at the El Paso border checkpoint in more than a decade.[2]
