Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s police force, dismantled an indoor marijuana plantation in a home in the historic centre of Tortosa.[1][2][3] Officers arrested a 30-year-old man as the alleged author of a drug-trafficking offence against public health.[1][4][2][5][3] The man was also accused of an electricity-fraud offence.[1][4] The detainee was released a few hours later and must appear before the judicial authority when required.[1][5]

The operation took place on Sunday at around 22:00 after officers of the Tortosa public-safety unit confirmed a possible plantation in a house on Carreró de Cabanes.[1][4][2][3] Officers observed covered windows and running air-conditioning units and smelled marijuana in the premises and ventilation ducts before entering and searching the building.[1] Inside they found a marijuana grow with complex lighting and cooling equipment, with several rooms altered to hold lamps, humidifiers, fans, air conditioners and exterior air outlets.[1][5] The Mossos seized 327 marijuana plants up to one metre tall in an advanced state of flowering, plus about ten wraps of cocaine.[1][4][2][5][3]

The house was illegally connected to the electricity supply to power the installation, producing disproportionate consumption.[1] The Mossos dismantled the fraudulent system because they considered it a safety risk for neighbourhood residents.[1] According to police, residents had complained about the number of people regularly coming to the house to buy drugs.[1]
