Police in Tahta, a district in northern Sohag governorate, arrested a 34-year-old man with a quantity of hashish, saying he was caught before he could sell the drug to customers.[1] The man, identified in police accounts as N. A. S., lives in Al-Jubayrat village in the district.[2][3] Detectives had received a tip that he was dealing in drugs and using one of the district’s villages as his base.[1]

The operation followed authorisation from the Public Prosecution and was led by Ahmed al-Bariri, head of the Tahta police investigations unit, with Captain Alaa Omran assisting.[4] Police said he was caught in the act with the seized items.[1] Besides the hashish, officers found cash that police suspect came from drug sales.[2][5] Questioned by police, he admitted holding the drugs for sale and said he wanted quick financial profit.[1] He was referred to the Public Prosecution for investigation.[6][3]

Dealing in hashish carries death or life imprisonment and a fine of between 100,000 and 500,000 Egyptian pounds under article 34 of Egypt’s 1960 narcotics law, the reports noted.[1] The arrest came amid a series of security campaigns in Sohag’s districts against drug dealing.[6]
