Police arrested a 34-year-old history-sheeter near S P Pattinam in Ramanathapuram district on suspicion of smuggling 19.8kg of hashish to Sri Lanka.[1] The arrested man was identified as Mano of Thiruvadanai, who was involved in two narcotics cases earlier.[1] A special team led by inspector David Ravirajan had mounted surveillance near Pasiyamman temple beach at Pasipattinam following a tip-off.[1] Around 12.50pm, police intercepted Mano and recovered 2kg of hashish from his possession.[1]

After questioning him, the team searched his residence and seized another 17.8kg.[1] The superintendent said the contraband is worth Rs 2 lakh per kg.[1] Police described the 19.8kg haul as worth nearly Rs 40 lakh.[1] The superintendent also said it would value around 10 lakh Sri Lankan rupees.[1]

Police said Mano was booked earlier this year in connection with the seizure of 15kg of ganja by S P Pattinam police.[1] He had been absconding in that case.[1] A fresh case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.[1]
