Shikarpur police in Narkatiaganj, West Champaran, acted on a tip that a tempo was bringing a consignment of ganja, cannabis, into the town.[1] Station house officer Manoj Kumar Singh said officers set up a vehicle check near the gas warehouse at Kundilpur, on the Narkatiaganj–Bhikhnathori main road.[1] When they signalled the tempo to stop, the driver and the others with him left it by the roadside and jumped into a nearby sugarcane field.[1] Officers chased them, but they disappeared in the dense crop and no one was caught.[1] Dainik Bhaskar reported a different flight: the occupants rammed a police vehicle before running into the cane field.[2]

A search of the abandoned tempo found packets of ganja hidden under the seat.[1] Police weighed the cannabis at 10 kilograms 400 grams.[1] They seized the tempo and a mobile phone.[1] Bhaskar said the search was carried out under magistrate and block development officer Suraj Kumar Singh, and that the cannabis was in a black bag under the seat.[2]

Singh said an FIR was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act against unknown smugglers.[1] Police were identifying the vehicle owner and others from the seized tempo and phone, and were raiding to arrest the fugitives.[1] Bhaskar quoted him saying further legal action was under way and that officers were tracing the people who fled and others linked to the smuggling.[2] No one had been named or arrested in either account.[2]
