Police in Luxor’s Al-Bayadiya district arrested a man in the Al-Habil area, describing him as a highly dangerous criminal suspect.[1] The man, identified in the reports only by the initials M. A., was a 35-year-old unemployed resident of the police station’s district with prior criminal records, police said.[2] He was a fugitive from a five-year prison sentence in a firearms and drugs case and was also wanted in a separate theft case.[1] Officers from the Al-Bayadiya police station’s investigations unit, led by Major Ayman Mahrous, arrested him after the public prosecution authorised the search.[2] Luxor’s security director, Major General Jameel Hassan, and the head of criminal investigations, Major General Mohamed Adel, were notified of the arrest.[2]

The search found about 1.5 kg of hashish, the resin of the cannabis plant, and about 250 g of a crystalline drug known in Egypt as shabu.[2] Officers also seized a sum of money, a mobile phone, a single-barrel shotgun and one cartridge of the same gauge.[2]

Police said he admitted holding the drugs for sale and keeping the weapon and ammunition for self-defence, and that he used the phone to contact customers and the money came from his drug sales.[2] Prosecutors in Luxor ordered him held for four days pending investigation, with the detention renewable at the legal deadline.[1]
