Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced businesswoman Jumoke Akinusi, named in the charge as Akinusi Jumoke, to 18 months in prison for exporting 1.10 kilograms of cannabis sativa to Cape Verde.[1] She pleaded guilty to a one-count drug-trafficking charge brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria’s anti-drug agency.[1] NigeriaAlert reported that the conviction followed her guilty plea to an NDLEA charge on Wednesday.[2]

Prosecutor Cyril Osaigbovo told the court she committed the offence on 14 August 2026 by exporting the cannabis without lawful authority through the National Handling Company Export Shed, a customs-controlled area at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos State, destined for Cape Verde.[1] The charge is numbered FHC/LAG/CR/771/2026, and NigeriaAlert gives the prosecutor’s name as Cyril Odion Osaigbovo.[2] The charge said she exported 1.10 kilograms of cannabis sativa, described as a narcotic similar to cocaine, LSD and heroin, contrary to section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act.[1]

After the plea, the prosecutor reviewed the facts and asked the court to convict her on her admission, the exhibits and the law.[1] Her lawyer, Michael Ogbodo, asked the court for mercy and a fine instead of prison, and said she would not repeat the act.[1] Justice Aluko imposed 18 months’ imprisonment with the option of a 500,000 naira fine in place of the jail term.[2]
