Justice Ibrahim Kala of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday 15 October 2026 convicted
and sentenced an estate agent, Salami Abideen Jide, to six years’ imprisonment for trafficking
32.20 kilograms of cannabis sativa, or a fine of six million naira.[1]
Jide pleaded guilty to a two-count charge brought by Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA), saying that on 9 September 2026 he procured one Ebenezer Bayode, a freight forwarding agent
of Maykar Ventures, to import the cannabis from Canada through the Skyway Handling Company import
shed, a customs area at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, and then imported it without
lawful authority.[1] The prosecutor, Cyril Osaigbovo, tendered the substance, concealed in a large
suitcase, and Jide’s confessional statement as exhibits; the court heard he had no previous criminal
record.[1][2]
The judge described the sentence as three years on each count with an option of a three million naira
fine on each, the prison terms to run concurrently and the fines cumulatively, alongside 60 days of
community service in place of the jail term, after the defence counsel Rachel Mimido Nyiew asked for
mercy.[1][2]
