On the afternoon of 17 August 2026, customs officers at the Capitou toll on motorway A8 at Fréjus in the Var stopped a French-registered Citroën C5 Aircross whose driver they found suspicious.[1][2] A drug-detection dog led them to two traps under the front seats with 51 heat-sealed bags totalling 81.54 kg of cannabis resin, and a third cache behind the rear seats with 27 bags weighing 37.64 kg, for 119.18 kg in all.[1][2]

The retired driver first said he did not know who owned the car, then that an unknown man had dropped him in Montpellier to collect it and follow a Spanish mobile phone, and finally admitted he knew he was carrying drugs but not what kind or how much.[1][2]

On Monday 5 October 2026 the Draguignan criminal court sentenced him to four years in prison with no adjustment, ordered him held in custody, banned him from French territory for five years and fined him 953,440 euros in customs penalties.[1][2]
