Chlef gendarmerie research officers seized 71.6 kilograms of processed cannabis (kif) concealed under the chassis of a utility vehicle during a check on the East–West Highway, according to a National Gendarmerie statement reported on 5 September 2026.[1][2]

The operation followed intelligence work and ended with two people arrested and the van seized.[1][2] Authorities described them as part of a criminal network involved in cross-border drug trafficking.[1]

The suspects were to be handed to the competent courts after the legal steps on the drugs and vehicle, while inquiries continued under judicial supervision.[2]
