Army detachments in Bechar, near the Moroccan border, seized 1,660 kg of cannabis resin in two operations in early October 2026 and killed one trafficker, the defence ministry said. The High Security Council, chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, decided on 2 September 2026 to create a specialised drug enforcement body modelled on the US Drug Enforcement Administration and to turn an army barracks at Tanezrouft in the Sahara into a high-security prison for drug traffickers. The presidency announced no legal text or start date.

Two decrees of 14 January 2026 set the rules for the drug tests introduced by the 2025 drug law. Job applicants in the public and private sectors must file a negative test taken within the previous three months; a positive result blocks the application until the person completes treatment, though the decree says it is not a permanent exclusion.
