York Regional Police seized about $150 million of illicit cannabis during Project Green Sweep, a summer 2020 operation under its cannabis enforcement strategy.[1] Officers executed fifteen search warrants on indoor and outdoor grow operations across York Region, including Markham, King, Stouffville and East Gwillimbury.[1] Thirty-seven people were arrested and 67 charges were laid.[1]

Police seized 28,964 plants and 3,990 pounds (about 1,810 kilograms) of harvested cannabis, plus seven firearms, two crossbows and a conducted energy weapon.[1] At one site in Schomberg they found three kangaroos and two zebras, and notified animal control.[1] Police allege organised crime exploited Health Canada’s medical-grow licensing rules, pooling designated-grow licences to run cannabis farms for the criminal market.[1] Chief Jim MacSween said the profits funded violence and other crime in the community.[1]
