On the morning of 3 November 2026, penitentiary police carried out a routine search of two cells at the Cagliari-Uta prison in Uta, Sardinia.[1][2][3] During that search, officers found and seized three mobile phones.[1][4][3] Officers also seized two power adapters and three USB cables used for charging.[5][4][3] Officers also seized small quantities of hashish, described as a small amount of cannabis.[5][3]

The seizure was announced by Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe, the autonomous penitentiary-police union, and Luca Fais, Sappe’s national secretary for Sardinia.[5][2][3] Capece and Fais praised the Cagliari institute’s officers for the professionalism, investigative skill and high sense of duty shown in the operation.[1]

They said the discovery of phones, chargers and drugs confirms the importance of maintaining high vigilance inside prisons to block the introduction and circulation of phones and drugs.[5][4] The union also pointed to the operational complexity and daily challenges of the Cagliari prison and to the prison police’s central role in protecting security and managing the facility.[1]
