Tyendinaga Police began investigating an illicit cannabis production site in August 2026 and asked the Ontario Provincial Police’s Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team to assist.[1][2] On 9 September, members of Tyendinaga Police and the OPP’s Provincial Liaison Team, Tactics and Rescue Unit, Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit and East Region Community Street Crime Unit executed a search warrant on the territory.[1][2]
Police seized about 5,560 cannabis plants, valued by the OPP at C$2.78 million, and 34 kilograms of cannabis shake, valued at about C$34,000. Officers also took C$1,880 and ten cell phones.[1][2]
Eight people were charged under the Cannabis Act with cultivating illicit cannabis and possessing cannabis for distribution.[1][2] One was a 41-year-old resident of Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory; the other seven, aged 51 to 69, were from Scarborough.[1][2] The OPP said the investigation was ongoing.[1][2] Police described the production site under investigation as involving a non-Indigenous criminal network.[1][2]
