Tripura Police and Border Security Force (BSF) teams destroyed more than 80,000 cannabis plants, known locally as ganja, in three separate operations across the state.[1] The three drives took place on 18 December 2023.[2]

In Kumarghat sub-division, a police and Tripura State Rifles team led by sub-divisional police officer Kamal Debbarma carried out a special drive at the Ramdula para forest reserve area.[1] The team destroyed and burned about 20,000 mature plants in eight plots in Unakoti district.[1]

A BSF-led joint operation with the Narcotics Control Bureau, Tripura State Rifles, Tripura Police and Excise Department destroyed about 31,500 immature plants around Gajeria and Ganiyamara villages under Bishalgarh police station in Sepahijala district.[1] Troops cut, uprooted and burned the plants on about 15 acres (6.1 hectares) at that site.[3] A second BSF operation with Kalamchoura police station destroyed about 30,000 immature plants around South Kalamchoura village and cleared about 18 acres (7.3 hectares).[3]

The BSF said it had been running a series of joint operations against illegal ganja cultivation in Tripura for the past week.[3] It said 6,09,400 plants had been destroyed in Tripura so far that season, mostly in Sepahijala district.[1]
