The Hisar district administration has launched a campaign to destroy cannabis
plants on the direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.[1] Deputy
Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, who heads the district administration, said a team
from the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, Hisar, had begun the work.[1] The team destroyed plants in ten villages: Chaudhariwali, Adampur, Kohli,
Khairampur, Fransi, Landhdi, Kinala, Narnaund, Mazra and Budhana.[1]
The department’s deputy director, Dr Rajbir Singh, said the plants had been
destroyed in those villages and that the work was continuing across the
district.[2] Dahiya said the plants were being pulled out by the roots and
destroyed so that they could not grow again.[2]
The High Court had expressed serious concern about the widespread growth of
cannabis plants.[2] It said the plants are used to prepare an intoxicant that
was destroying the younger generation “like termites”, and that curbing their
spread was very necessary.[2]
