A young man brought food to detainees held in pavilion No. 2 of the Third Police
Station in Posadas, in Argentina’s Misiones province.[1] The delivery included
a 500-gram packet of yerba mate, a herbal infusion drunk in Argentina.[1][2] As
part of routine security checks, officers began inspecting the goods entering
the station.[3] They opened the yerba packet and found a white polyethylene
bag holding a greenish-brown plant substance.[1][2] Specialists from the
Directorate of Dangerous Drugs weighed the substance and tested it; the field
test was positive for cannabis sativa and the weight was 143 grams.[1][2] The
check stopped the packet before it reached the detainees.[3]
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office intervened and called in the Directorate of
Dangerous Drugs, a unit of the Misiones police, to carry out the tests.[1][2] The
detainees in pavilion No. 2 are “procesados”, people held while criminal
proceedings against them continue.[1]
