Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit intercepted passenger B.S. Nathani after
he arrived at CSMI Airport in Mumbai on Sunday from Bangkok on the basis of spot
profiling for contraband.[1] Mumbai Airport Customs then arrested Nathani, a
19-year-old Ulhasnagar resident, for allegedly possessing drugs sourced from
Bangkok.[1] Nathani was placed under arrest.[1] His defence counsel,
Advocate Sunil Pandey, said Nathani is a student who was influenced by a woman
in Bangkok and induced to carry a package to someone known to her in India
without knowing its contents.[1] Pandey said the court granted Nathani bail.[1]
Customs officers searched Nathani’s backpack and found clothes and one food
packet that held two plastic packets.[1] Those packets contained marijuana
described as hydroponic weed and weighing 960 grams.[1]
The accused claimed a woman he befriended in Bangkok had asked for his help
delivering her package to her relative in Mumbai and said he did not know what
was inside.[1] A Customs officer said the preliminary investigation pointed to
other persons who had yet to be traced and that efforts were being made to
identify and apprehend key associates.[1]
