Officers seized 76 bales of hashish weighing 3,040 kg.[1] They also took the boat, fitted with four powerful outboard engines, and fuel cans still on board.[2]

A surveillance system detected the suspicious vessel and the force launched an interception and boarding operation with the provincial maritime service in Huelva and an air-service helicopter.[1] The crew fled at high speed and made abrupt manoeuvres that the force said put them and the officers at serious risk, while throwing cans of petrol into the sea.[1] The Guardia Civil’s interceptor Río Tiétar caught the narcolancha, and officers boarded it and detained all eight people aboard.[1]

All eight are accused of drug trafficking, smuggling, a fuel-supply offence against collective safety known as petaqueo, and serious disobedience to the authorities.[2] Horizons, an Algerian daily citing Spanish media, reported that the boat had set out from Morocco’s Atlantic coast.[3] Horizons said the case again highlighted the challenges facing Spanish security services on the sea routes from Morocco to the Iberian peninsula.[3]
