Emergency Response Service (ERS) teams entered an abandoned plot at Choisy, in the Baie-du-Cap area, on Tuesday, 20 January 2026. They found 198 cannabis plants growing in plastic sacks set on improvised platforms high in Ravenala trees, commonly called traveller’s trees. The plants measured between 75 and 125 centimetres tall.[1][2]
Police watched the site for several hours hoping to find the cultivators, but nobody came. Officers uprooted the plants and secured them as evidence, then dismantled the platforms and destroyed the cultivation equipment on site. No one was arrested during the operation, and an investigation opened to identify those responsible.[1][2]
The reports say the abandoned plot had been searched after police received information about possible illicit cultivation. Both describe the sacks as sitting on platforms fixed high in the trees, rather than on the ground. Le Mauricien says officers hoped to identify the landowner as well as the cultivators; L’Express also reports that an inquiry was opened to identify those involved.[1][2]
