Police in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Pegunungan, found a cannabis plot in Kampung Pipukmo, a village in Hubikosi district, on Thursday 27 August 2026.[1] Residents clearing land found the plants and reported them through the Pipukmo village head, Wamena Kota police chief AKP Saharuddin said.[2] The operation followed patrols and aerial detection with a drone, police said.[1]

Officers seized 16 plants: 12 still growing and four already harvested.[1] The harvested plants measured 120, 114, 129 and 137 cm.[1] The plot lay about 3 km from a public road and officers reached it on foot.[1] Police put the plot at about 260 cm by 400 cm.[1] No owner had been identified, police said.[1] Police took the plants away for examination and said they were still hunting the planter.[3] No arrests were reported.[3]

The Jayawijaya narcotics unit chief, Iptu Jan B Saragih, said cannabis harms health, social life and a person’s future.[1] He said police did not want the plant to spread into community life, especially among young people in Papua.[1] AKP Saharuddin said residents had been police partners in reporting security problems, including cannabis.[2] Police asked residents to report cannabis planting and said they would follow up professionally and humanely.[1] Jayawijaya police also use drones to monitor forests and remote areas where cannabis may be planted.[4]
