A man was sentenced to 14 years in prison by the People’s Provincial Court of Holguín for cultivating and selling marijuana in the Jagüeyes de Puerto Rico area of Banes municipality.[1]

The case, registered as Case 2 of 2026 in the Third Criminal Chamber, grew out of 2025 investigations by the Banes Criminal Investigation unit; the National Anti-Drug Directorate then monitored the suspect under the “Jagüeyes Case” file.[1] He was arrested on the morning of 6 May 2025 hiding in bushes near a fenced field, and officers seized 429 Cannabis Sativa Indica plants, 14 to 77 cm tall with a net weight of 2,420 grams, plus 11,280 pesos in cash.[1]

Prosecuted for drug trafficking under Article 235.1 of Penal Code Law 151 of 2022, which carries 10 to 30 years, he received 14 years with repeat offending as an aggravating factor; the sentence added revocation of civil rights, a 14-year ban on leaving the country, and confiscation of the cash.[1] The court vice-president said the trial respected the accused’s procedural rights.[1]
