Egypt’s Fund for Combating and Treatment of Addiction tested 3,660 school-bus
drivers in several governorates during the first month and a half of the
2026/2027 school year, and 22 samples came back positive.[1] The fund said 21
of the 22 had used hashish; the other tested positive for tramadol.[1] All 22
positive cases were referred to the public prosecution on a charge of driving
under the influence.[1] The education ministry was to dismiss any of the
drivers found to be working in schools.[1]
The checks involved the General Directorate of Drug Control, the General Traffic
Directorate, the General Secretariat for Mental Health at the health ministry
and the Central Security Department at the education ministry.[2] Masrawy
reported that the round covered 45 days.[3] The fund said the surprise checks
would continue throughout the school year and expand to other governorates.[2]
Parents can report a suspected driver on the fund’s 16023 hotline.[1] The fund
said reported cases would bring immediate, confidential surprise checks.[2]
