Police in Indur, in Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district, arrested 19-year-old Devaraj after he allegedly killed his mother at their home in Pazhaya Indur.[1][2] Thanthi TV reported that he stabbed Chinnapappa, 42, with a knife while under the influence of cannabis, known locally as ganja, and that she died at the scene.[1] The Hindu said he attacked her with an iron rod around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, 29 October, after she refused him money.[3] The Hindu gave her age as 45.[3]

The Hindu reported that Devaraj had been arrested three months earlier after he was filmed threatening the public with a sword near the Indur police station while wearing a traffic policeman’s cap.[3] His mother secured his release on bail on Wednesday, 28 October, by depositing ₹50,000 she had borrowed, according to the same report.[3] Dinakaran reported that he had been addicted to alcohol and cannabis since childhood and had been released on bail shortly before the killing.[4] On the night of 29 October he came home under the influence of ganja and asked his mother for money, Dinakaran reported.[4] When she refused, he stabbed her with an iron rod and a knife, Dinakaran reported.[4] Neighbours who heard her screams found her dead and Devaraj standing nearby with an iron rod, according to Dinakaran.[4]

Dinamalar, which gave his age as 20 and his mother’s as 45, said he was drunk.[5] The Hindu described him as inebriated at the earlier arrest.[3] Indur police sent Chinnapappa’s body to Dharmapuri government hospital for post-mortem, Dinakaran reported.[4]
