Police in Cauca arrested a 34-year-old driver, identified only as ESUA, in the act of moving more than 2.6 tonnes of marijuana described as the creepy type, hidden in a turbo cargo truck.[1] Preliminary investigations said the load was bound for illegal markets in Peru and Chile.[1] He was the driver of a 2007 Hyundai HD 65 turbo truck, plates UPQ254, in which the load was found.[1]
Units of the criminal investigation section, Sijín, and the National Police antinarcotics directorate seized 1,186 packages weighing 2,663 kilograms.[1] The organised-crime line of Sijín, attached to the Cauca police department, reported 2,563 kilograms, and the antinarcotics directorate another 100 kilograms.[1] Authorities estimated the marijuana’s commercial value at 266,300,000 pesos and also seized the truck, which they valued at about 95 million pesos.[1] The search was on the Pan-American Highway in the stretch through Cauca department.[1]
A guarantee-control judge declared the arrest legal, and the driver was left with Specialised Prosecutor’s Office 52 of the directorate against drug trafficking.[1] He was to remain in jail while answering a charge of trafficking, manufacturing or carrying narcotics under article 376 of the Penal Code.[1] The same account says he will stay in jail while the court decides his legal situation.[1] Authorities said they still had to establish where the marijuana came from, who sent it, and whether the driver acted alone or for a network able to move large loads into other South American countries.[1]
