The Southern Alberta Marijuana Investigative Team, a joint unit of the RCMP, Calgary police and Alberta’s criminal intelligence service, broke down the door of a house in the 100 block of West Springs Place SW on the afternoon of Monday 6 December 2004.[1] Officers found a sophisticated three-stage marijuana dirt-grow operation holding nearly 2,000 plants, plus 300 clones in a refrigerator, in what the team called its biggest bust since the previous December.[1][2]

Police said the crop could have earned dealers over $2.4 million once matured and sold on the street.[1] The raid capped a record year in which Calgary drug squads took just under 72,000 plants off the market, worth nearly $87 million, up from about $50 million the year before.[1]
