The Cairo criminal appeal court accepted a driver’s appeal against a three-year prison sentence and cut the term to six months for using hashish and possessing drugs in the El Gamaliya district of Cairo.[1][2]

Police from the El Gamaliya police station, under the Cairo Security Directorate, stopped the driver during a security patrol after they grew suspicious of him, and he tried to flee when they approached.[1][2] They caught him riding a motorcycle that had been reported stolen.[3][2] A search found cigarettes containing hashish, and he admitted he was holding them for his own use, after which the police took the legal steps in the case.[1]

A chemical laboratory report said the seized item was a cigarette containing parts of a substance confirmed to be hashish, which Egypt’s anti-drug law lists in its first schedule.[1] The case was referred to the investigating authorities, who carried out their inquiries before the court issued the ruling.[3]
