Customs officers at Cairo International Airport found four transparent bags of sweets mixed with hashish hidden among the clothes of a foreign worker identified in court records as Mishil M.[1] An inspector at the airport police’s drug-control administration had received a tip that she was arriving from abroad with drugs and alerted customs officers, who searched her bags.[1] She admitted possessing the sweets and said she held them for her own consumption.[1] A laboratory test confirmed the sweets contained hashish, which Egypt’s anti-narcotics law lists in its first schedule.[1]

The public prosecution charged her with possessing hashish for consumption and sent her to criminal trial.[2] She was released pending the case.[1] She did not attend her trial, and Cairo Criminal Court sentenced her in absentia to three years’ aggravated imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 Egyptian pounds.[1]

After the absentia verdict she began retrial proceedings.[1] Cairo Criminal Court adjourned the retrial on 28 October 2026 to 8 November 2026 so that she could attend.[3]
