Appeal court raises zamal traffickers' terms to up to seven years
The Saint-Denis appeal court raised the sentences of three of four men who ran zamal from Réunion to Mauritius between July 2023 and April 2025. The former chief of staff of the Sainte-Suzanne mayor and a second defendant drew seven years each, a third five years; the fourth term stayed at four years.
Réunion customs seize 140 kg of Bangkok cannabis in record week
Customs officers at Saint-Denis airport in Réunion found 140 kg of Thai cannabis herb hidden in air cargo bound for Amsterdam on 10 September 2026, the island's first such freight seizure. In the same week officers also seized 17 kg of Thai herb from a British traveller and 37 kg of cannabis resin from a passenger arriving from Paris, among more than 200 kg of drugs customs reported.

Two arrested as 156 kg of cannabis seized on Bras-Panon seafront
Gendarmes seized 156 kg of cannabis packed in 10 sacks as two men prepared to load them onto a boat on the seafront at Bras-Panon, Réunion, on 26 July 2026. Both were arrested and brought before a prosecutor; investigators say the haul was bound for Mauritius.
