The case began after investigators noticed marijuana sales in Quellón and the local prosecutor asked
OS-7 to trace the supply chain.[1][2] On 13 October 2026 officers intercepted the group on Route 5
Sur at the Purranque toll plaza while they were driving south from Santiago.[1][2]
Five Chilean men travelling in two vehicles were detained.[1][2] More than 60 kilograms of marijuana
was found in one of the cars, intended for distribution in Quellón and Puerto Montt.[1][2] Police
also seized both vehicles, mobile phones and cash; Cooperativa says no weapons were found.[2]
Four of the five had prior criminal records, some under Chile’s drug law.[1][2] Regional prosecutor
Carmen Gloria Wittwer called the haul one of the largest linked to Chiloé supply investigations in
2026.[2] Results were presented at a press briefing at the Carabineros training school in Puerto
Montt the same morning.[2]
The five were formalised and ordered into pre-trial detention while the investigation continues.[1][2]
La Tercera notes that police warned about mobile apps used to alert drivers to checkpoints on the
highway.[1]
