On Friday 4 September 2026 NDLEA operatives tried to stop a 20,000-litre fuel tanker with registration MKA 960 XC on the Akoko–Lokoja expressway in Ondo State.[1] The agency said the driver refused to halt, later abandoned the tanker at a church premises in Ugbe Akoko and ran into nearby bush.[1]
Officers searched the vehicle and found a false compartment holding 165 bags of cannabis with a combined weight of 2,145 kg, hidden alongside legitimate fuel cargo reportedly destined for Jos in Plateau State.[1] Spokesperson Femi Babafemi said the same tanker had evaded capture in earlier operations.[1]
The seizure was part of a wider NDLEA sweep across nine states disclosed on 6 September 2026; this report covers only the Ondo tanker.[1]
NNPC Limited said on 7 September that preliminary checks showed the truck was neither owned by the company nor in its authorised dealer fleet, that its logo did not match current branding and that the vehicle did not appear in NNPC’s asset register.[2] NNPC commended the NDLEA and said it would cooperate with investigators over misuse of its corporate identity.[2]
NDLEA chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa praised the officers involved.[1]
