Police in Kuznetsk, Penza Oblast, detained a 48-year-old local man suspected of illegally storing a large quantity of drugs.[1] The Kuznetsk district police said they had checked a report that the man was involved in trafficking narcotics.[2][3] During operational-search measures, officers found and seized a box of plant material from the man and sent it for expert examination.[4][3] An expert examination identified the contents of the box as marijuana weighing almost 498 grams.[2][3] The man admitted guilt and said he had collected parts of the plant during a walk by the river the day before, for his own use.[5][3] He described the plants as wild and said he had not intended to sell them.[1]

The regional Interior Ministry’s press service confirmed that a criminal case had been opened.[2][3] It was brought under part 2 of article 228 of the Criminal Code, which covers illegal storage of drugs on a large scale.[1] The offence carries up to 10 years in prison.[2][3]
