Anti-narcotics units of Senafront, Panama’s National Border Service, carried out two raids in the Pueblo Nuevo sector of Darién province with the Judicial Investigation Directorate of the National Police and the Darién drug prosecutor’s office.[1] During the operation one citizen was detained, and officers seized presumed illicit substances, ammunition, technological equipment and cash.[1] The raids were part of Plan Firmeza and Operación Escudo de Acero, strategies through which Senafront says it seeks to fight microtrafficking and other drug-related offences nationwide.[2]
Among the items were packages of plant material presumed to be marijuana, and carrizos, small straws, of white powder presumed to be cocaine.[1] Officers also found unfired .38-calibre ammunition, several mobile phones and a metal grinder that still held residues of presumed drugs.[2] Cash was seized, though the authorities did not state the amount.[2] The detained person and the evidence collected were placed at the disposal of the competent authorities for the corresponding legal process.[2] Senafront said the action was meant to fight the drug trade and reinforce security in national territory.[1]
