Border Guard Bangladesh detained one person on Thursday 29 October during separate anti-drug and anti-smuggling drives on the Cumilla border.[1] Jugantor, citing a press release from Cumilla Battalion (10 BGB) issued that day, said the person was held on suspicion of involvement in smuggling.[2] The detainee and the drugs were handed to Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station for legal action.[2]

Patrol teams from the Bibirbazar and Bauyara Bazar border outposts of Cumilla Battalion carried out two drives in Adarsha Sadar upazila.[1] The searches were at Bibirbazar land port and Dakshin Suryanagar, about 300 and 800 yards inside Bangladesh from the border.[2] BGB is Bangladesh’s border force, and a BOP is one of its border outposts.[1]

Daily Naya Diganta reported that the battalion seized 15 kg of cannabis, 117 bottles of Escaf syrup and 25,000 tapentadol tablets, and recovered a further 9 kg of cannabis from the person detained.[1] Jugantor, citing the same battalion’s press release, reported the cannabis as 24 kg together with the same counts of syrup and tablets.[2] Escaf is a codeine cough syrup commonly trafficked on this border, and tapentadol is an opioid painkiller sold as tablets.[1]

BGB estimated the market value of the whole mixed seizure at Tk 51,30,800.[1] Lieutenant Colonel Mir Ali Ejaz, commanding officer of the Cumilla battalion, said BGB operations to stop smuggling and cross-border crime were continuing.[1]
