At about 11 a.m. on 13 May 2026, officers from the Dunmaili Subdistrict Police Station found a large stand of suspected cannabis while patrolling a landscaped greenbelt in Yining.[1] A specialist comparison confirmed the plants were wild cannabis growing naturally, rather than a cultivated crop, the Xinjiang News report said.[1] The station organised a clearance and searched the surrounding area for additional plants.[1] After more than two hours of work, officers reported that more than 1,000 wild cannabis plants had been cleared.[1]
The police explained how to identify the plants and their risks to residents watching the operation, and asked the public to report suspicious growth.[1] The report places the find within continuing grid-style searches during the growing season, which it describes as a key period for drug-source plants to appear.[1] It gives no exact address for the greenbelt, area searched or plant weight.[1] It names no grower or suspect and reports no arrest or later outcome.[1]
