An army unit moved on a cannabis-planted area estimated at about 60 dunums in the town of al-Kanisa, Baalbek, destroying the kif crop on Saturday 10 October, according to the armyโs official statement published that day with its own photographs and video.[1] In the field the unit detained 17 Syrian workers without legal papers and seized the harvest equipment found in their possession.[1]
The seized items were handed over and interrogation of the detainees began under the supervision of the competent judiciary.[1] The official photographs show masked soldiers pulling mature plants by hand while an armed comrade stands guard, and a red tractor with a plough attachment turning the rows under in a second pass.[1] The crop stands in red soil stretching toward the hills around the town, with the tractor photographed working the rows under a clear sky.[1] The statement headline gives the area as about 60 dunums, which converts to roughly six hectares.[1]
