Police seize 82 grams of marijuana in Ochamchira
Police in Ochamchira found more than 82 g of marijuana on a local resident in October 2026. They opened a criminal case for illegal purchase, possession and transport of narcotics and placed him under house arrest. At 82 g the amount is above the 50 g especially-large threshold, so the top possession tier of five to seven years applies.
Sukhumi airport customs find 4.8 grams of cannabis on a passenger
On 19 August 2026 customs officers at Sukhumi airport found 4.8 g of cannabis in the luggage of a 38-year-old Russian citizen during a pre-flight check. He was detained and handed to the interior ministry. The amount was just above the 4 g large-amount threshold, so the case could be prosecuted in the aggravated possession tier rather than as simple possession.
Abkhazia convicted 29 cannabis growers in two years
In April 2026 the prosecutor general's office reported that courts had handled 33 drug-plant cultivation cases in 2024–2025 and convicted 29 people. Twelve received real prison terms, nine suspended sentences and four were sent for compulsory treatment; fines came to 2.45 million roubles. Police seized 598 cannabis roots, mostly South Krasnodar, and 547 opium poppy roots.
Police find 15 cannabis plants after stopping a man with a packet
Police in Ochamchira stopped a 31-year-old local man in July 2025 and found a packet of cannabis on him. He led officers to a plot in the forest near Elyr where he had grown 15 South Krasnodar cannabis plants. A criminal case was opened and he was placed under house arrest. The case shows that a small outdoor plot is prosecuted as a crime, not treated as a minor infraction.
