Yongin Dongbu police said on 13 August that they had detained two cousins, including a man in his 30s known as A, for growing cannabis and selling it online, and referred them to prosecutors under the Narcotics Control Act.[1] From October last year to July, the pair leased two low-rise multi-unit homes, fitted them with LED lights, hygrometers and insulating sheets, and grew seeds bought on overseas websites.[1]

They sold marijuana, cannabis jelly and liquid cannabis at 500,000 to one million won (about $360 to $720) a time, taking cash or cryptocurrency over social media.[1] They had seeds delivered to other people’s addresses to evade detection, and themselves inhaled cannabis heated in a coffee canister; a rapid drug test came back positive.[1]

A resident’s report about the suspicious pair led police to them through canvassing, and officers arrested them on 6 August.[1] Police seized 35 growing plants, 2.3 kilograms of marijuana, 2.15 million won in cash and about 17 million won in cryptocurrency; police put the marijuana’s value at about 230 million won (about $165,000), or some 4,600 doses.[1] Buyer investigations continue, with online drug crime named a focus of the second-half crackdown.[1]
