A 12-hour drug eradication exercise at Wiruni, Upper Berbice River, on Sunday 11 October 2026 led to the discovery and destruction of four cannabis fields measuring approximately seven acres in total.[1]
The first cultivation measured approximately two acres and contained about 15,000 cannabis plants ranging between four and six feet in height, and a makeshift camp containing approximately 40 pounds of dried cannabis was also discovered there.[1] The second cultivation measured approximately one acre and contained about 4,000 ganja plants ranging between five inches and one foot in height.[1] The third field measured approximately two acres and contained about 10,000 cannabis plants between five and six feet tall, and the fourth measured approximately two acres with about 8,000 plants between six inches and two feet in height.[1]
The suspected cannabis plants, dried cannabis and makeshift camp, with a combined estimated value of $26,832,112, were destroyed by fire at the location.[1] No arrests were made, and investigations are ongoing.[1]
The Guyana Chronicle headline for the same Wiruni operation matches these figures — 37,000 plants, 40 pounds of dried cannabis and a $26.8M value — though its article page could not be opened.[2]
