Sri Lanka Customs officers opened nine foreign postal parcels held at the Central Mail Exchange in Colombo and seized narcotics with a street value of Rs 60.26 million.[1][2] The haul was 4,934 grams of kush cannabis worth Rs 49.34 million, 1,035 grams of hashish worth Rs 10.35 million, 25 grams of ecstasy tablets and four grams of cocaine.[1][2]

Three parcels had arrived from Thailand and two each from Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, picked up during routine inspections of incoming international mail over several months.[1][2] Customs detained the suspicious parcels pending collection, and examined them with Police Narcotic Bureau officers after the recipients failed to claim them.[1] One account says the parcels were addressed to fictitious local addresses.[2]

The Narcotics Control Unit and the Postal Appraising Branch ran the examination with the Bureau’s officers.[1] Customs handed the drugs to the Police Narcotic Bureau for investigation and legal proceedings; the reports name no arrests.[1][2]
