The Railway Protection Force of the Northeast Frontier Railway seized nearly 60 kilograms of ganja, a form of cannabis, in a drive against trafficking through its stations.[1] Three people accused of moving it were apprehended and handed to the Government Railway Police for further action.[1] Two of them were held at Agartala railway station in Tripura on 21 April 2026.[2] The third was Delwar Hossain, 26, of Nurul Haque Chowmuhani under Sonamura police station in Sepahijala district.[3] He was apprehended at the station’s parking area on the afternoon of 22 April.[3] A search of his backpack found 6.005 kilograms of ganja.[3] The Government Railway Police registered a case against him under the NDPS Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, at Agartala GRPS police station.[3]
The checks ran from 20 to 22 April 2026.[4] At New Jalpaiguri railway station in West Bengal on 20 April, officers found about 18 kilograms worth Rs 9 lakh and 13.8 kilograms worth about Rs 6.9 lakh in two separate checks.[2] Nobody was held over either consignment.[1] At Agartala on 21 April, a joint operation with the GRP seized 21.48 kilograms valued by the RPF at about Rs 10.74 lakh.[4] On 22 April, a further 6 kilograms, valued by the RPF at close to Rs 3 lakh, was seized at the same station.[4] The three days produced around 60 kilograms of ganja, which the RPF valued at about Rs 29 lakh.[4]
The RPF said it had stepped up surveillance and intelligence-based operations to prevent the misuse of railway premises and trains for trafficking.[2] It said such drives would continue.[2]
