A truck driver was arrested after police allegedly discovered 26 bags of chamba hidden beneath 135 bags of maize and empty egg crates in a company vehicle.[1]
The arrest happened on Friday 23 October 2026 at Phalula in Balaka, as the truck travelled from Lilongwe towards Blantyre.[1] Balaka Police spokesperson Inspector Gladson M’bumpha confirmed the arrest of George Benson, 41, who works for KelFoods Company, after officers at an adhoc roadblock received a tip-off that the DAF 15-tonne van, registration BV 6826, was carrying cannabis beneath other goods.[1]
During questioning, Benson reportedly said he had travelled from Blantyre to Mzuzu on 17 October to deliver eggs at KelFoods’ warehouse, and that while returning on 21 October he stopped at Chilanga in Kasungu at around 11 pm, where he loaded the 26 bags of cannabis for delivery to a woman at Mdeka in Blantyre.[1] Police seized the cannabis, the maize used to conceal it and the vehicle; Benson, of Lilika Village under Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre, is expected in court after the cannabis is examined.[1]
