Cannabis sold by a Tokyo gang member had spread to six high-school students in Kochi city, and police had busted twelve people in total by 11 May for possessing or passing on the drug.[1] Those busted included six boys in their first to third years at Kochi high schools alongside the 57-year-old member of a designated crime syndicate living in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward.[1][2]

Police say the six bought cannabis multiple times between May and August of the previous year from a 17-year-old in Matsuyama whom they had met through music events, keeping it at home and passing some on to others.[1][2] The cannabis the boys bought had been mailed to the 17-year-old’s father by the gang member.[1] Questioned, the six said they had smoked it out of admiration for musicians abroad.[1][2]

Probation and reform school

The six high-school students had already been sent to family court and all received probation, while the 17-year-old was sent to reform school.[1][2] Police described the 57-year-old as the first supplier and the teenager as the middleman.[2]
