Hokkaido police re-arrested two 30-year-old Sapporo men on 11 August 2026 for profit-motivated cultivation of 1,083 cannabis plants in a former factory in Hidaka town, a seizure the police said was the largest from a single building in Hokkaido, worth about 100 million yen at street prices.

Officers of the Hokkaido Police Organised Crime Countermeasures Section and Sapporo Nishi police
station re-arrested two unemployed 30-year-old men from Higashi ward, Sapporo, on 11 August 2026,
suspecting them of cultivating 1,083 cannabis plants for profit in a former factory building in
Hidaka town, Hidaka District.[1][2]
The police put the drugs’ terminal street value at about 100 million yen and said it was the
largest cannabis plant seizure from a single building anywhere in Hokkaido; the two, Renman Nakagawa
and Yusuke Sato, had earlier in July been arrested on suspicion of possessing about 330 grams of
dried cannabis for profit.[1][2] The
suspicion is of profit-motivated cultivation under the Cannabis Cultivation Regulation Act; police
did not say whether the men admit or deny the charges and are treating the case as organised
cultivation and distribution.[1][2]
