Hong Kong Customs officers found about 5 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds concealed in the check-in suitcase of a 59-year-old mainland man who arrived from Manila on 10 October 2026, and arrested him.[1][2] Follow-up investigation led officers to arrest a 58-year-old mainland man who had also arrived from Manila the same day and was suspected of being connected with the case.[1][2] Customs estimated the market value of the buds at about HK$1 million.[1][2]
The two men were jointly charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug, and the case was to be brought before West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on 12 October.[1][2] Under Hong Kong’s Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug carries a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment.[1][2] Customs said it would keep targeting passengers from high-risk regions through intelligence analysis and risk assessment, and reminded the public not to carry unknown items for other people in exchange for payment.[1][2]
