Guyana's attorney general tells police not to lock people up for small amounts

After police in Matthew's Ridge held a man found with 4.2 g of marijuana, Attorney General Anil Nandlall said the detention misapplied the amended drug law. Because a court cannot impose prison for possessing up to 30 g, he said, the police cannot detain a person for it before trial and bail must be granted; they should charge the person and bring them before a magistrate.
