A mob attacked a police team investigating a self-styled godman’s cannabis crop at Vaipet (Vayupet) village in Sirikonda mandal, Adilabad district, on Saturday 10 October 2026.[1] Around 50 residents, suspected to be followers of the godman, attacked the officers with sticks, police said.[1] Villagers said police had abused them with objectionable language, and pelted stones and attacked with logs.[2] Telangana Today reported four policemen injured, including an inspector, an ASI and two constables.[1] They were taken to RIMS-Adilabad, where their condition was said to be stable.[1] Inspector Ramesh suffered head injuries and constable Shivaprasad a fractured hand, Deccan Chronicle reported.[2]

Police had arrested Chahakati Ramu, a self-styled godman, a day earlier.[1] Ramu, 62, is known in his village as the maharaj.[2] Police recovered 18 plants worth Rs 1.80 lakh from his possession.[1] He was taken into custody while trying to flee during the raid.[1] Police said he grew the plants for his own consumption and to sell them.[2]

Additional police were sent to Vaipet and prohibitory orders were imposed in the village.[2] Police registered an attempt-to-murder case against around 20 villagers.[1] Superintendent of Police Ankhil Mahajan named five injured officers, including two armed reserve constables.[3] On Tuesday 13 October, authorities announced the arrest of 20 villagers over the attack.[3] Mahajan said they were held on charges of obstructing police from discharging their duties.[3] The 20 included Ramu, the police said.[3] Villagers conspired to attack the police after Ramu’s arrest, damaged the police vehicle and stole a policeman’s cell phone.[3]
